„SmartInfusions“: Innovation for smart patient care

After two and a half years of successful project work, the “SmartInfusions” collaborative project will conclude on June 30, 2026. In collaboration with its partners, SITEC developed solutions to make infusion therapies in oncology safer, more efficient, and more interconnected.
Greater safety and efficiency in infusion therapy
Infusion and chemotherapy treatments require safe and efficient processes. Medications must be prepared precisely and clearly identified, and administered reliably.
As part of the “SmartInfusions” project, smart medical consumables and connected processes were researched and developed. The goal was to automate clinical processes to enable seamless tracking and significantly improve patient safety and infusion efficiency. The project also aimed to reduce the daily clinical workload of nursing staff.
The project consortium consisted of ConnCons GmbH, the project coordinator and a key driver in developing smart medical consumables and their peripherals; Murrplastik Medizintechnik GmbH, which specializes in developing processes and tools for medical injection-molded parts; Medical Clinic 1 (Hematology/Oncology) at Dresden University Hospital; and the University Hospital Pharmacy at Dresden University of Technology, which focused on analyzing clinical requirements.
Assembly processes and system designs for smart consumables
SITEC focused on researching innovative assembly processes and developing system concepts for the highly scalable manufacturing and integrated testing of smart medical consumables, such as connectors and tubing. The project involved building various technology demonstrators, including ones for automated coil winding, precise coil contacting, and joining tubing to connectors. Through these efforts, SITEC contributed its expertise in automation, process development, and the industrial implementation of complex assembly and testing applications to the collaborative project.
Important foundations laid for further development
After a two-and-a-half-year project period, important foundations were laid for the further development of smart infusion systems. The results demonstrate the potential for manufacturing and testing medical consumables in the future in an automated, cost-effective, and high-quality manner.
Collaboration with the project partners is planned to continue even after the project ends. The focus will be on further increasing the level of automation in individual manufacturing and assembly processes, establishing and digitally networking the entire process chain, and taking further steps toward certifying the developed products.
The goal is to lay the groundwork for successfully transferring the technologies and solutions developed in the project to industrial applications and future mass production.
